Any thing other than sunlight for white balance gives a false color for the sky. Tungsten is way to blue and not the true sky color.

Thanks for the great information on the Night sky photography. I wish I found this years ago, as it would have saved me a lot of trial and failures. Nevertheless, I’m still experimenting with White Balance for the Desert Nights. This is a 18 shot 2 row panorama using a Nikon D7100, Tamron 28-75mmm at 28mm, f/2.8, ISO 2500, 20 seconds. I used a Sunwayfoto DPP 64M indexing rotor to speed up the panorama process.

Gavin, thank you for the excellent article. One question: when shooting wide open,focused on a star how do you get a reasonably sharp foreground? Do you merge multiple exposures? Thank you.

I’m still feeling my way through post (little different every time). I would be interested in how you do post. 25mm Batis and a7rii are working for me. Just printed this at 20 by 30 and am happy with it.

Interesting because 24×1.5 = 36 and 500/36 is ~ 14s which is where the author suggested you start. So … you must be doing something wrong.
